L'Envulve

A Feminist Fun Fair

An exhibition by Anna Berger et al.

Inspired by the fantastical world of the fairground, a room-filling, walk-in installation takes shape in the exhibition hall.

Upon entering, visitors are immersed in the labyrinthine pathways of a colourful, joyful world. There are various rooms featuring sculptures and video installations that play with illusions and, for example, create afterimages on the retina. A glimpse behind the scenes breaks up the staging. Lectures take place in the backstage area as part of the supporting programme.

The installation uses the fairground as a backdrop for reflecting on cultural themes. The traditional ‘male gaze’ is countered. It is contrasted with an inclusive, community-focused and humorous ‘female gaze’. Irony and wit serve to lighten the critical discourse on gender roles.

Historically, the fairground was a place of contradictions: on the one hand, it served to construct racist, ableist and sexist prejudices; on the other, it was a safe haven for the ‘other’. In ‘L’Envulve’, the fairground retains its vibrancy, yet the curiosities now look back and develop a life of their own.

The project was developed collaboratively by students from various departments at the Kassel Art Academy and the University of Kassel under the direction of Anna Berger. From 2018 to 2025, Anna Berger was an artistic-research assistant to Jan Peters (Department of Film and Moving Image); the exhibition is her qualification project and was realised with funding from the ZFF.
